I had a great week in the shop I made 7 sales in all, gee I never had that before, I wonder how come, it must all the changes Etsy has been bringing. Whatever they are keep making them.

Another review and giveaway

Hi, today is so boring and it's raining so why not have another review and a giveaway?
Besides it's always fun to read about a new Etsy artist and Maya Tobias is pretty new,
she opened her shop in March 2009 , so I figured we could give her a hand and feature her and get to know her too. I found her shop through pounce, which is how I get to find pretty much a lot of etsy artists, and then I check how many sales they have, and if they don't have too many I decide to feature them, of course their items have to appeal to me. Her jewelry did appeal to me, it was different and very gold, funny because I don't wear gold and I don't make any gold jewelry, so why did she appeal to me? The design attracted me, the forms, the asymetricality of the designs and the way that she uses very little color with the gold but just enough. Everthing is so perfect together, I was drawn to her shop because of all that, my favorite is the red coral necklace, that's the piece that won my heart, so simple and yet so full of life.

What's your name? Maya Tobias

Where are you from? I’m originally from Pittsburgh but I live in Manhattan now.

What has gotten you interested in your craft? I’ve always done different types of art but I love jewelry because it’s so practical and functional. It’s art that you can wear.

What's the item you're most proud of? My favorite piece is the Colleen Ellis Affair Necklace. I love that it’s really bold and makes a statement. It would be hard not to notice this necklace if you’re wearing it. The chain is a vintage Chanel chain from this amazing bead store in Austin, Texas and most of the charms are from my favorite antique dealer in New York, a guy named David.


Where do you get your inspiration from? I get inspiration directly from the materials I buy. As soon as I find something I like at a flea market or bead store, ideas of what to do with it start flooding into my head. Also, New York is so full of art and culture that I’m inspired by everything I see here.

What is your process? Once I have an idea of what I want to do with my new materials I usually have to run home and start working because I’m too excited to concentrate on anything else. So my most productive work time is definitely right after I go to the antique market.
I usually end up remaking each piece at least five times until I’m totally satisfied with it. I’ll think that I’m just going to change one little thing, but I’ll end up with a piece of jewelry that’s completely different from where it started. Sometimes I’ll put it away for a few days and then look at it again and fix it until I’m totally proud of it.




Is your craft full time? If not, what do you do to pay the bills? I work at a brand consultancy called Brand Now that specializes in product innovation—it’s sort of like an idea factory. It’s a very creative place with great people.

What do you do in your spare time? I act like a tourist in New York by trying to take advantage of everything the city has to offer—so I go to a lot of different parties, concerts, galleries and markets. I have a potluck dinner every Tuesday night with my high school friends who all moved to the city also. I recently started running and I’ve been running across the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn.

What are your goals for your business? I would like to continue to create pieces that are unique and innovative. Once I have more capital I want to start buying and using more precious stones. I would love to get more press on blogs (thanks for being the first to feature me!) and have a humble following of fans. I’ll probably try to sell stuff at local boutiques also.

Good afternoon all of you out there!
I hope you are having a wonderful day. I want to offer you another feature this week with a wonderful giveaway. Today we will be meeting a very talented lady who makes extraordinary jewelry with exquisite taste. Her name is Mindie Pruss. She enjoys crochet, knitting, making decorative boxes, magnets, soap, bath salts and fizzies, and lip balms but her true love is JEWELRY and anything that glitters. What’s your name? Mindie Pruss

Where are you from? I grew up in Philadelphia but now live near Los Angeles … the land of endless freeways and gorgeous weather.

What has gotten you interested in your craft? I’ve always loved jewelry and supported other crafters for years buying their creations. I decided to take an introductory jewelry making class when I was 25 (several decades ago!) and from then I was hooked! I truly come alive when designing and creating crafts and jewelry—especially while listening to old Beatles records! I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t making something. I’ll get on a “kick” with a particular craft, do that for awhile, then move on to something else … although I always come back to jewelry. I’ve knitted and crocheted, made decorative boxes, created soap, lip balm and bath fizzies, decoupaged plates, holiday wreaths … the list goes on! I’ll probably open another shop to share these treasures!

What's the item you're most proud of? It’s hard to pin it down to just one! I love making jewelry that sparkles, has flowers, hearts, or animals in it, or has a nostalgic feel to it—sometimes all of these in the same piece! I’ve gotten lots of positive feedback on how colorful my shop is. Where do you get your inspiration from? My dreams!—Even when I sleep, flashes of color combinations and patterns fill my head. My creative daughter often gives me ideas for designs. I’m inspired by flowers, luscious colors of yarns and fabrics, Victorian postcards, paintings by Monet and Van Gogh, and the fabulous lampwork and polymer clay beads I’ve purchased from so many incredible artists on Etsy!

What is your process? Ideas will percolate for awhile in my head, then I’ll sit down with my boxes and boxes of beads and tools, and just start playing with them! I don’t typically have a fully formed picture of exactly how I want a piece to look … it evolves as I mix up different colors, materials and findings. It's wonderful to "be in the zone", losing track of time while I'm trying out different designs. Even after I’ve completed a piece, new ideas for it keep sprouting … which leads to the next piece of jewelry!

Is your craft full time? If not, what do you do to pay the bills? Unfortunately I can’t spend all day every day making jewelry! I work in the business world as a consultant and executive coach, helping people to strengthen their leadership skills and influence. I’m an independent contractor, not an employee of a particular organization, which gives me the great freedom to set my own schedule. Since the economy has gone south, I’ve had very little consulting work, which has given me tons of free time to make jewelry—I’ve made and listed well over 100 items since I opened my shop on January 30th of this year!

What do you do in your spare time? Ha, what spare time?!! – since opening my shop, I’m totally absorbed with etsy, to the possible detriment of my family! Aside from crafting, I love to read, sing, and spend time with my family and friends. At the moment we’re busy preparing for my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah in August. Those old issues of the Sunday New York Times are just piling up, waiting to be read!

What are your goals for your business? They’re twofold. Financially, my goal is to have my shop bring in revenue in the five figures. Creatively, I want to keep trying new techniques, and continue to love what I do. I’ve also had an unexpected bonus from joining the etsy community, which is making many wonderful new friends.

Anything else you would like to share with my readers?
I’m married to the man of my dreams, Doug, who is endlessly tolerant about having beads take over many rooms in our house. We have a wonderfully energetic 12 year-old daughter Sasha. Our sweet 18 year-old cat Angel luckily still has a spring in her step and jumps on top of counters when we’re not looking (naughty, naughty!).

Yart Sale

Welcome everyone, today was a very wet day in these Quebec parts, but a very busy day none the less.
I had my appointment with my orthopedist for my back and I have more tests for the back to go to in the next month before the operation just to make sure about a few more things he says. And I listed for part of the afternoon some more supplies in one of my shops.

Luxury Spa feature and giveaway

What a beautiful day it is, the sun is shining and I am creating some beautiful items for my shop, and will be listing them shortly. I wanted to so something special today so I decided to feature a very talented lady from Etsy who has accepted to be featured on my very humble blog. What has gotten you interested in your craft?
The interest I had in natural living and essential oils.
What's the item you're most proud of?
I can't think of just one item, but all of my handmade soaps are my creations and my pride & joy.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
All things natural and good for health and beauty.

What is your process?
I'm not sure what you mean by this, but being an artist, I get inspired by the natural world around me, then create something from that. Right now, I mostly do that through my soap making with it's many colors, shapes, textures and scents of anything in our natural world, like: soft florals, spicy woods, fresh waterfalls, sage deserts, intoxicating tropics and anything a person would like to take in the shower with them to relax body and mind.
Is your craft full time? If not, what do you do to pay the bills?
Sadly, my soap making is not full time so I do it part-time. My other part-time job is working for the USDA Agricultural Research Service as a Purchasing Agent.
What do you do in your spare time?
What spare time??? Ha! Seriously, I garden, do photography, crochet and work on my website, Return-to-Natural, and of course make soap and bath products with glee!

What are your goals for your business?
My goals are to keep improving my products and master the business and marketing side of it, which does not come easy for me. Like my husband says, I "excel in the research and development dept.".
Anything else you would like to share with my readers?
I would like to encourage them to try handmade soap and natural skin care products. They will be amazed at how clean their skin and hair will feel. Your body will love you for it! Also, to become aware of how many chemicals there are in skin care and cosmetics sitting on the store shelves, which certainly can't be good for them....To seek out natural products to use for healthier living.

Depression again,

I'm going trhough depression again, I tried to go off some meds(remeron) about 3 weeks ago so I could maybe live without some pills and maybe loose some weight. But I started to cry heavily and not function and feeling very depressed and wanting to kill myself again. So back to the psychiatrist and telling my story all over again, cause he was new and he didn't know me and bla bla bla... And so we decided to get me back on Remeron but a small dose to start with and see how that would do for 1 month. Cause Remeron makes you gain weight really bad. And with my back problem I can't let that happen , especially with my 3rd major back surgery due on June 1st. I'm stuck in a vicious circle. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like I'm just on this earth to just take in the air and let it out, but at least with the meds I can work and function a bit normally to say the least.. I have depressions one after the other and it seems that the doctors don't control them properly. Even my husband can't take it anymore, I have a weird feeling I'll end up alone before long. Whish would be quite understandable.
Even I can't stand myself some times. I find the days long and I could just sleep them all.
But I guess I just can't . Gee I know I'm not alone going through this, I wish I could get some words of encouragement from some people, then I guess it would kind of help.
Well tomorrow is another day and I should be better, and I will fight to be better and I will let you know. I know that I am loved and I will concentrate on that.

With all the running around with Easter I was forgetting to wish you guys a Happy one, so here it is before the family gets here for supper.
Hope you all have a safe one and a joyous one.
So far my day was pretty terrific, I'm cleaning a bit, so my house looks just right for the family when it gets here, and I'm getting the food ready after that.
